C3 Software Ltd was contracted with BAE Systems over several years covering numerous projects, forming lasting relationships with project leads and development managers.
A key area with which Carl was involved over a two-year programme, was to aid the transformation of a department to agile working practices.
Assisting in roadmap strategy, delivering training sessions around application use, process adoption and coaching for Scrum methodologies. Assisting and providing guidance with the adoption process of agile and scrum working practises and methodologies. This consisted of aspects of the Scaled Agile Framework and disciplined agile delivery.
Carl implemented a fully integrated commercial off the shelf (COTS) application lifecycle management suite from Atlassian, consisting of Jira, Bitbucket, Confluence, and Portfolio for improving the collaboration between product owners and developers. Jira was upgraded and adapted to improve workflow automation and provide enhanced management of story tracking, tasks and defects. The overall aim was to increase efficiency and see a reduction in cycle times. This was achieved through improved processes, establishing mature development patterns and practices, achieved through portfolio project planning, allowing management to track and control projects, costs, and personnel.
After originally completing a short term contract as a .Net developer, for the integration of a time and attendance system with BAE Systems current software, Carl was contracted to assist on several other long-running projects. During which he developed a web-based application which allowed the Class Output Management team to plan platform maintenance tasks, ready for when they come ashore.
This also included a web-based dashboard which allowed the department to monitor the health of SQL jobs and bespoke applications. The variety of projects required a wide use of technologies such as; the Class Output Management platform, written in .Net, utilising WCF as its data layer. Due to the complex nature of the front end and to make the UI simpler, web technologies were used including HTML, JavaScript, JQuery, CSS(other software used for BAE Systems include, SQL Server integration, Entity Framework 4, .Net 4, C# syntax, CSS, SSIS 2008, SQL SMO, among others).
Contracts such as these have played a key role in Carl keeping up to date with the latest technologies and working practises, formal processes and project documentation. Carl is always keen to share his knowledge and apply what he has learnt on previous projects to each customer and their project needs. Carl has a collaborative approach to work, gaining insight into businesses and their needs, their current working practices and what C3 can offer to assist them in their journey.
I’ve worked with Carl on several projects at BAE for the naval dockyards. It became obvious early on that Carl was very proficient as a developer but also as a solution architect, able to see the overall dependencies and with an uncanny ability to think outside the box and get to a solution very efficiently. He was instrumental in several of my projects when the existing solution came short of delivering the outcome expected and Carl was able to get the job done on time. An entrepreneur at heart, a reliable and accomplished developer and architect by trade, always keen to keep himself up to date and on par with any technology trends, I can’t recommend him enough for any software work your business endeavours to undertake.
